Saxon - The Power & The Glory

Saxon is a British heavy metal band, formed in 1976 in Barnsley, Yorkshire. As leading lights in the New Wave of British Heavy Metal they had a brief period of U.K. Top 40 success in the early 1980s, and also tasted success in Europe and Japan. They are still performing.

In 1980 follow-up album Wheels of Steel spawned two hit singles: the title track, and the crowd favourite "747 (Strangers in the Night)". "The Strong Arm of the Law" album, considered by fans to be one of their best recordings, was released later that same year, and chart success continued with singles from their next release, Denim and Leather. The title track to that album is seen as an anthem of the early 1980's metal movement.

"Power and the Glory" is the fifth studio album by heavy metal band Saxon released in 1983. Great song.

Throughout the band's history, line-up changes have been common. Saxon recently did a "25th Anniversary of NWOBHM" tour of Germany beginning in early March 2005. To celebrate the anniversary of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, the band played songs they recorded during the 1980s.

Danger Danger - Bang Bang

Danger Danger is a glam metal / rock band formed in 1987 in Queens, New York.

In 1989, the band released their debut album. The album spawned two hits with "Naughty Naughty" and "Bang Bang", with the former gaining a spot in MTV's Headbanger's Ball. The band went on tour opening for KISS, Alice Cooper, Extreme and Warrant.

In 2005, the band released Live and Nude, which was recorded in 2003. They performed in Japan this year.

Dangerous Toys - Teas'N, Pleas'N

Dangerous Toys formed in 1987 in Austin, Texas. Their first album was released in 1989. The self titled album included the single "Teas'n, Pleas'n" and many other good songs like "Scared", "Bones in the Gutter" or "Sport'n a Woody". After their second album ("Hellacious Acres") they were the opening act for the Operation Rock and Roll extravaganza tour. They toured with Alice Cooper, Judas Priest, Motörhead, Metal Church and even The Cult.

Over the years members have worked on various side projects, with McMaster (singer) being the busiest. He has fronted such bands as Broken Teeth (featuring Lidel), Gahdzilla Motor Company, the Kiss tribute band SSIK and several others.

In 2005 Dangerous Toys reunited to celebrate their 18th anniversary and while their future may not be bright, the odd reunion should keep their fans satisfied.

Korn is a heavy metal/alternative metal band from California. They are often credited with creating the nu metal genre and inspiring a wave of nu metal, alternative metal, and rap metal bands in the mid 1990's and early 2000's.

Since their 1994 self-titled debut, Korn have sold 25 million records worldwide (16 million in the U.S), which makes Korn the best selling metal act of the last 12 years.

The band, despite loosing Brian "Head" Welch to the hands of the Lord on 2006, they released on 13 March 2006, the single entitled "Coming Undone" from their 2005 album "See You On The Other Side".

Towards the end of the video the band themselves begin to come unraveled and try holding themselves together until the end of the song, however they still "come undone" and float away into nothingness. Good one!!

Slipknot - Wait And Bleed

Slipknot is band from Iowa formed in 1995. I don't know them that well but I have seen them once and there's no doubt that Slipknot is currently one of the most popular musical groups, with violent and full of energy stage performances, and music which is perceived as extreme in comparison with other bands in the mainstream market.

The band is also known for its peculiar image: the members wear matching uniform jumpsuits and each has a unique mask. I must admit that this band has something and that "Wait And Bleed" is my favourite Slipknot song, which is included in their selftitled album in 1999.

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Dani California

Red Hot Chili Pepers are a California-based band from Los Angeles birthed from an alternative rock movement of the 1980s and early-1990s that also included bands like of Jane's Addiction, Fishbone and Thelonious Monster. Throughout their twenty-three year career, the Chili Peppers have diversified their sound adding elements of Funk, Punk, Psychedelia and Pop to their songwriting. Vocalist Anthony Kiedis, bassist Michael "Flea" Balzary, guitarist Hillel Slovak, and drummer Jack Irons formed the band in 1983.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers are mainly known for five things: Flea's powerful bass, their diverse musical precision, unique lyrical composition, their uncanny wearing of inside out cargo shants (pants mixed shorts), and their tendency to play bare chested (or sometimes even naked).

On April 4, 2006, the band's first single "Dani California" from Stadium Arcadium was released. And the video is really good.

Helmet - In The Meantime

Helmet is an alternative metal band formed in New York City by Page Hamilton (vocals/guitar) with Henry Bogdan (bass), Peter Mengede (guitar) and John Stanier (drums) in 1989. The guitar sound is heavily distorted and dissonant, with choruses that often involve guitar feedback waves (geniously done). Page Hamilton has been hailed as one of the more innovative metal guitarists of the 1990s.

Their first Interscope release, 1992's Meantime, was produced entirely by the band and was certified gold in the US by 1994. The album has sold over 1 million copies worldwide and remains Helmet's top-selling album.

The band is working on a new album to be released in June of 2006. The album will be a return-to-form of sorts, recorded and co-produced by Wharton Tiers, who recorded Helmet's first two albums, Strap It On and Meantime. I'll be waiting for sure!

Pearl Jam was formed in 1990 in Seattle, Washington. They are one of the few mainstream grunge bands that has remained active since the 90's. Currently, the group can boast a large and loyal fan base which contributes to making the band one of the most popular live acts in the world.

Pearl Jam's debut album is "Ten" (amazing one) containing eleven tracks and I dare to say that none of them is bad. The album, released in 1991, produced three hit singles: "Even Flow", "Alive", and "Jeremy".

Pearl Jam has officially announced their eighth studio album Pearl Jam will hit the stores on May 2, 2006. Rumors are good! Let's hope so.

Sleeze Beez - Stranger Than Paradise

Sleeze Beez is a glam band from The Netherlands. Their first album was released in the summer of '88 in the Benelux area. After a sold out Dutch tour, the Beez signed a deal with Atlantic Records who released the Billboard-charting album worldwide in '89. Sleeze Beez toured the U.S. in the summer of that same year opening for Skid Row and performing over eighty headline club shows. They recorded 4 albums in total plus a Live in Tokyo cd. No doubt that the great guitar player and singer Justin Hawkins makes them distinguishable from other present-day rock bands.

Velvet Revolver - Dirty Little Thing

So after mixing the Guns and STP (and also guitarist Kushner from Wasted Youth) we obtain the very fine band Velvet Revolver. A band that captures all the great elements of two different paths.

Their album "Contraband" was released in June 2004, debuting at #1 on the Billboard album charts, #11 on the British album charts, and #2 on the Australian charts. As of August 2005, "Contraband" had sold more than 2 million copies in the United States, and the rigorous touring in support of the album has reached global scales. Already, the band has toured both the United States and Europe twice, while also hitting Australia and Japan.

"Dirty Little Thing" makes me think of Stone Temple Pilots but with a great guitar solo and more solid drums. This blending of music had a brilliant result so I can not wait to hear their new stuff.

Stone Temple Pilots - Plush

Stone Temple Pilots released their first album "Core" in 1992, including the hits "Plush", "Creep", "Wicked Garden", and "Sex Type Thing". The critics initially disregarded the group, writing them off as a Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Alice in Chains wannabees, however, the debut was commercially successful. It was a great band and 6 albums can say so. They had some troubles with Weiland and the band ended their journey. "Plush" is a great song, very 90's but a classic.

Guns N' Roses - Welcome To The Jungle

Guns N'Roses was one of those great L.A. bands, with lots of power and attitude. In my opinion, there's no better Guns' album than the 1987 "Appetite For Destruction" and "Welcome To The Jungle" is an amazing song that captures all of what the band was. The album was so good that the band began a world tour. Guns N' Roses traveled across the United States, and in spring of 1988 were invited to the notorious Monsters of Rock Festival in Europe. The band shared the stage with famous groups including Iron Maiden, KISS and Judas Priest.

After "Lies" I was not too happy with the Guns material, the "Use your Illusion" could have been one album instead of two and Axl could have been cooler towards the fans and to be honest after watching a Live concert (on Mtv, the famous Paris one) I got scared to see how bad Rose was performing so I was convinced that the band was on a countdown.

Guns N' Roses were great and for all those die hard fans, I bet that the new touring and new album is making them very happy. I might go to one of their concerts to honor the good old rock n' roll days!! Yeeeaaaah!

Overkill - Spiritual Void

Overkill is one of the first Thrash Metal bands, formed in the early 1980's in New Jersey and very active ever since.

Overkill is one of the very few bands that started in the heyday of Heavy Metal in the 1980s, early 1990's and have constantly been touring and releasing albums for over 20 years without ever really falling into decadence. Most of last year's summer they spent it on the road in Europe playing the big summer festivals before returning to America and touring the west of the United States as well as Canada.

"Spiritual Void" is included in the 1993 album "I Hear Black" and this song is my Overkill number one pic. It brings back great memories!! Long live Overkill!

Queens Of The Stone Age is a rock music band from the Palm Desert, California, formed in 1997. "When we were making a record in 1992, under the band Kyuss, our producer Chris Goss, he would joke and say "You guys are like the Queens of the Stone Age." The band was originally called Gamma Ray, but we got threatened with a lawsuit because someone else had it. So we were Queens of the Stone Age". - Oliveri (2000)

"Kings would be too macho. The Kings of the Stone Age wear armor and have axes and wrestle. The Queens of the Stone Age hang out with the Kings of the Stone Age's girlfriends, when they wrestle. And also, it was also just a name given to us by Chris Goss. He gave us the name Queens of the Stone Age. Rock should be heavy enough for the boys and sweet enough for the girls. The "Songs for the Deaf" album's popularity peaked when it reached gold status in 2003 and the singles "No One Knows" and "Go With The Flow" became hits on radio and MTV. Great band but to be honest I liked Kyuss better but QOTSA is doing a fine job for sure!

Megadeth - Die Dead Enough

Megadeth lives on! Dave Mustaine stated that album "The System Has Failed" would be the last Megadeth record before he would end the band and going solo. However, after their 2005 Tour and a clear revitalisation in the future prospects of Megadeth, Mustaine decided to 'allow' Megadeth's continued existence. This was clearly stated on the Official Megadeth Website: "MEGADETH will continue as a band. MEGADETH will record a new album. MEGADETH will continue to play." And I drink to that!! Hell yeah! Megadeth is one of the greatest heavy metal bands and it would've been sad to not have them around. "Die Dead Enough" is included in their last work, "The System Has Failed".

Arch Enemy is a Melodic Death band that are anti-religion and 100% rebels. They were formed back in 1995 in Halmstad, Sweden. The only member that is not Swedish but German is their amazing vocalist, Angela Nathalie Gossow. "We Will Rise" is included in their 2003 "Anthems of Rebellion" album.

Godsmack - Awake

Godsmack is a Boston-based alternative metal band. After debuting in 1997 with All Wound Up, Godsmack signed a nice deal with Universal, who in 1998 reissued the LP as a self-titled effort with new tracks. The band's audience built slowly but strongly, and Godsmack was certified gold in 1999, the same year the group was invited to join the Ozzfest tour. Peculiar vocals and powerful riffs are some of the attributes of this great band.

Candlebox - Far Behind

Candlebox was a very good grunge band that achieved success in the early 90's, even if the Seattle grunge heads didn't consider Candlebox as a true representative of the genre. It is true that the band had other sounds besides grunge, you could appreciate some hard-rock and bluesy style as well. Candlebox's self-titled debut album was released in 1993. "Change" was the first single and caused a very positive impression in the audience. Then "You," appeared and gave them a breakthrough hit on mainstream rock radio, which set the stage for the success of "Far Behind". "Far Behind" was a major hit on both mainstream and alternative radio. Their second work "Lucy" came along and even if the album was not a great success, I honestly think that their quality didn't went down. Their 3rd and last album "Happy Pills" was released in 1998 and despite the quality of new members like the original Pearl Jam drummer Dave Krusen and the grungy sound, the disc sold poorly. Candlebox is a band to remember.

This is great news for the grungers and for all of those who like good power music. It won't be Layne singing but I would like to see the other three guys playing the songs again. No need of burying Alice in Chains together with Layne. He was great but maybe Alice can have a new era with another singer. Anyway, Cantrell can sing and he can arrange the backings à la Alice!!

Angra - Angels Cry

A great Brazilian band. Angra is one of the best power metal bands in the world and "Angels Cry" is a very good example of their qualitites as musicians. The song is included in the "Reaching Horizons" and "Angels Cry" albums. "Reaching Horizons" was their 1992 demo-tape but soon after they could record the "Angels Cry" album. That album was the first of many great to follow. The essence of the Angra's musical style is still intact. Powerful guitars, with catchy riffs and memorable solos, vocals with huge feeling, and the thundering rhythm section, that gather the strength of heavy metal with classical influences and typical Brazilian sounds are the Angra assets.

If Dream Theater is not one of the best bands in the world is almost the best then! For me they are the best anyway, they have the skills, the creativity, the brains and the will. Edguy rules! Not much to add after what I already wrote about this great German band. "All The Clowns" is not among their top 10 songs but is good enough to jump and scream. Even if the song is not top 10 material it is included in my top Edguy album, no other than the 2001 "Mandrake".

A very classic band together with a very classic piece. Pink Floyd was formed in 1965 in Cambridge, England. An English rock music band, noted for progressive compositions, philosophic lyrics, sonic experimentation, cover art and elaborate live shows.
The 1979 album "The Wall" is magnificent and "Another Brick in the Wall" is a masterpiece that will always be in the music world. A band to admire because being that good for that long is only for the best.

Dokken was one of the big ones back in the 80's and this song reflects it. "Burning Like A Flame" is included in their 1987 album "Back For The Attack". The album also included other famous songs like "Kiss of Death" and "Dream Warriors". Great band.

Metallica - Sad But True

Metallica is a well knowned band and there's no need to go into details. The "Black Album" presented a good single: "Enter Sandman", then an ok power ballad: "The Unforgiven" but I was expecting some anger from the band, so I was delighted with "Sad But True" and to feel the power in it.

What happened next in the band's discography is "sad but true" but well Metallica will always be Metallica and despite their mediocre material from the last years they have their early years' stuff to make up for. St. Anger was a bit better than the previous cds but well the drums could sound better. Anyway this song kicks ass.

L.A. GUNS - Never Enough

Tracii Guns was co-founder of Guns n' Roses but after some disputes with the peculiar Axl Rose he decided to start his own band. L.A. GUNS got their start on Los Angeles' Sunset Strip more than 15 years ago and they have been born again. They haven't stopped touring the world since the release of their self-titled debut in 1988, but for seven of those years they did so without original frontman Phil Lewis. However, since the release of Man In The Moon in 2001, which marked the reunion of Lewis with founding guitarist Tracii Guns and drummer Steve Riley, there's been a new fire burning in the L.A. Guns camp. Their new release, Waking The Dead, significantly furthers the band's classic rock and blues vibe by propelling them into a heavier, more musically challenging realm. Children of Bodom has gone from being “this amazing band from Finland” to a household name in the metalscene. Alexi Laiho spits out his lyrics with vitriolic hate, the guitars (courtesy of Alexi and Alexander Kuoppala) shared everything with razor-sharp precision while the rhythmsection (the demolition duo of Henkka T. Blacksmith & Jaska W. Raatikainen) pounds away like the world is about to end. As a final coup de grace come the keyboards of Janne Warman, making sure the path of destruction is complete with the fervour and precision of a seasoned executioner on a killing spree. Great Band!

Helloween is an epical band and one of the greatest power metal bands ever. There had long been rumours that Helloween intended to release a follow up to the two legendary “Keeper”-albums but it is not until June 2005 that the band confirms “Keeper Of The Seven Keys – The Legacy”. The first single was "Mrs. God" and marked the return of Helloween. Great band.

Def Leppard started in 1977 and it wasn't until 1980 on March 14 that they recorded their first album. This debut LP called "On through the Night" got the band to tour with some of the best musicians like Judas Priest, Ted Nugent and AC/DC. They are a well structured band and they know how to play. The Brittish have 11 albums including two greatest hits and they are one of the few remaining bands from that 80's front. Their masterpiece is the 1987 "Hysteria" album that sold up to 16 million copies around the globe. "Rock of Ages" is included in the "Pyromania" album from 1983.

In my opinion the "Living Dead Girl" is nicely done, this Nosferatu atmosphere is just great!

Mötley Crüe - Kickstart My Heart

The Crüe is one of the bands with attitude that knows how to rock. For my taste "Dr.Feelgood" was not the top album thanks to songs like "Without you", "Same ol' Situation" and "Time for Change" but I remember going crazy with "Kickstart My Heart" and the whole story behind the song, Sixx's afterlife encounter due to an O.D. After "Dr. Feelgood" they came up with the "Decade of Decadence" greatest hist cd and those great two singles "Primal Scream" and "Anarchy in the U.K." cover, so I thought that they were back in business for good but for my surprise the band went separate ways. They still rockin' and that's a good sign for rock n' roll!!

Judas Priest was formed in Birmingham, England, in 1970, the group's core members were guitarist K.K. Downing and bassist Ian Hill. Rob Halford joined the band in 1973 and then in 1974 Glenn Tipton was also on board and that's when one of the best bands in heavy metal history began its quest.

They have a classical-traditional flow running in their songs, combining modern rhythms with power guitar parts and great melodic vocals. The "Masterplan" album in 2003 was a great debut for this band and Elighten Me is a good sample of what they are capable of.

Iced Earth have improved from a promising heavy metal to a heavy weight power metal band, mixing classic 80's metal and 90's production assets, resulting in a great style. 2003 was important for the band, the longtime vocalist Matt Barlow retired from the music business, but Iced Earth could not have found a better replacement, Tim Owens, former Judas Priest singer. There's no doubt that his singing has power and fits to Iced Earth like a glove.

Seattle’s NEVERMORE is a fascinatingly complex while entirely accessible band. I have not heard much of them but their quality is transparent. 2003’s Enemies Of Reality has been labeled as "master piece" by some critics. I enjoy this song very much!

Testament was one of the first San Francisco's thrash metal bands in the 80's. "The Legacy" was an amazing debut in 1987, putting Testament in the thrash metal scene. "Souls Of Black" in 1990 was a great album that coincided with the European "Clash Of Titans" tour (Slayer, Megadeth and Suicidal Tendencies).

The story of Helloween begins in 1978 in Hamburg. They had so many member changements that you could think that their music has suffered a little bit during the years but the essence of Helloween remains. What a band. The 1987's Keeper of the Seven Keys Part I is one of my favorite Helloween cds. Here's the Mtv version video of Halloween, sorry is not the original but well is better than nothing.

C.O.C started as a hardcore band way back in 1982. They started with an aggressive sound with metal and hardcore tendencies and then in the 90's they went to a more alternative metal ,with lots of Sabbath influence some say, wich increased their audience. Deliverance in 1994 was a good album but from my point of view they lost a little bit of their power. In 2005 they regrouped and even if I haven't heard the Arms of God cd, I bet that the bass and guitar still ruling.

A video worth those guitars!! Mercyful Fate was created in 1981 in Copenhagen by King Diamond (a very wide voice range vocalist, amazing!). A band that got reunited in 1992 and a year later released a great album called In the Shadows. Egypt is the first song and together with the rest, (The Bell Witch, Shadows, Thirteen Invitations, Room of the Golden Air, ...) they make of this album a very unique one.
